EMR - Need to Propagate Actual Reasons for Transition
Although the HITECH act promises cash benefits for physicians, practices and hospitals transforming their paper based medical record system to EMR, Electronic Medical Records, the EMR adoption rate hasn’t really kicked off as it should have. It’s true that more people are now interested in transition towards paperless practice citing financial benefits, with hopes to get the promised Stimulus funding from Government. However, more appropriate reasons to switch to Electronic Medical Record Software have gone in hiding, under the carpet of Economic Stimulus Funding and Meaningful Use Recommendations. In fact, Economic Stimulus package has highlighted the miscommunication that earlier existed between EMR vendors and healthcare professionals as all of sudden healthcare industry has been more reactive and favorable to IT implementation in wake of Economic Stimulus package. This means if physicians and healthcare professionals had cited the financial and operational benefits with EMR before, many more of them would have opted for medical software by now. Even now, with entire buzz around HITECH act, whole of healthcare industry knows about the reimbursements they’ll get for using electronic health records in their practices, but still not many are aware of the actual benefits they will get with EHR/EMR implementation. After all it’s not just about getting the Stimulus money, transition to electronic medical or health record systems could revolutionize the workflow of your practice.
Fewer physicians and healthcare professionals are concerned about how EHR or EMR software could affect their bottom line indirectly, by simplifying the process and optimizing the workflow. It’s because they aren’t aware of actual benefits of successful EMR implementation which also makes them more likely to believe in myths surrounding EHR/EMR and use of software in healthcare practice. They’re more likely to believe that EMR could actually disrupt their workflow and it could raise serious privacy and security issues. Hence they are made to believe that their spending on EMR could prove to be such an overhead that may never pay off. It’s because they are ignorant of security measures taken by EMR vendors to ensure data security and privacy to make patient records more secure, private yet easily accessible to concerned people. Not to mention the quick searching and editing capabilities that come with use of software. Healthcare professionals are needed to be told that they could finally get rid of large store room that is piled up with files containing patient records and they will no longer have to spend hours in finding a record they needed, rather a click of mouse will do it.
Electronic Medical Record software ensures productivity and facilitates expansion of healthcare practice, it allows physicians and practices to see more patients in fewer time hence increasing their productivity. And with growing customers, they don’t have to worry about shifting into a new, larger office as all patient records will be stored in digital storage system eliminating the need for a larger record room or hiring more staff to handle more customers. This is something that isn’t part of Government funding but it actually is more appropriate and genuine reason to switch to EMR. Productivity, expansion, accessibility, operational savings & ease of use, and if you needed more there is Economic Stimulus package.
